First steps

I talked to the Austin Tenant's Council (http://www.housing-rights.org/ ) and they advised me to send a formal letter of complaint over to the people at UAM regarding my problems.

Here is the mail that I sent Colleen King and Cheryl (the manager of UAM) today.

Dear Colleen,

This is in reference to our conversation this Wednesday, May 2, 2007 and again on Monday, May 7, 2007 regarding the condition of the chiller/Air conditioner in Chateau Duval (3106 Duval. St. Austin, TX 78705). You mentioned that you have been trying to fix the state of the chiller for a long time and yet you are unable to fix it.

The A/C has not been working all weekend; I called maintenance over the weekend, and the person in charge promised to remedy the situation on Monday. However, when I called you today, you did not even seem to be aware of the situation.

It has been since March that I have called you with regard to the problem that the air-conditioning/Chiller does not work at Chateau Duval. The time we spoke in March, you mentioned that the fault was with the thermostat – and not with the cooling device and that, come May, the cooling device would kick in on warm days and that the apartments would be well cooled.

It has been over 2 months since I last spoke to you over the phone and inspite of numerous reassurances from your side that the A/C / chiller will be fixed, the situation at your apartment complex remains very grim. The heat is suffocating me and my brother, who live in the apartment, and we are exposed to the risk of heat-strokes and other medical complications arising out of living in poorly ventilated, hot and humid environments.

Please repair the air-conditioner/chiller quickly. Your repeated assurances that the chiller is new/working are wearing thin. The fact remains that the heat in our apartment is unbearable and should this situation persist, we will be forced to look elsewhere for housing.

Regards,
####
